Your editorial (November 22) opposing China’s entry into the World Trade Organization rests on two arguments, neither of which meet the Journal’s usual high standard of logic and reason.
First, you point out correctly that China wishes to enter the WTO as an emerging economy, which would permit it to meet lower standards relating to government export subsidies. You say China should not be treated as an emerging economy because it has 1.2 billion people and someday it will be a developed economy. Huh?
Second, you say that because China has been involved in international trade disputes it should not be permitted into the WTO, which was created to adjudicate trade disputes. Huh?
Why devalue your own currency and waste the time of your readers by making nonsense arguments? Why not say straight out that because you expect China to be an enemy of the United States some day, we should do everything we can to make sure it is.
